Nepenîyên Xwezayê takes cameras into the gorges and forests of Behdînan to film what most residents have never seen.
An hour’s drive from Duhok the road climbs into oak forests, limestone gorges and valleys fed by cold springs. The programme Nepenîyên Xwezayê (Secrets of Nature) spent a year filming these landscapes through every season.
Spring and snow
In spring the hillsides are covered in wild flowers and the rivers are loud with snowmelt. In winter the high villages can be cut off for days. The crew followed shepherds, beekeepers and park rangers who know these mountains by heart.
The series also looks at threats: forest fires, illegal hunting and rubbish left by weekend visitors. Each episode ends with practical advice for people who want to enjoy the mountains responsibly.
